PILOT 3 (pt.1): ‘Unveiling Fashion 2.0’

Completed

Q2 2024 - Q3 2024

Supported by UAL’s Dr Gavin Clarke and Alisdair Aldus, ac.xyz.exchange explored innovative solutions to empower Micro and Small fashion enterprises, chiefly among this was our Smart Tech Pack® concept. Our research focused on integrating advanced blockchain and circular business models, to foster sustainable, equitable outcomes in fashion

We Through collaborations with UAL students and industry partners, we aimed to uncover new methods for IP protection, ethical manufacturing, and reducing overproduction. Current projects, like Hackney Harbour, showcase the potential of zero-inventory models and decentralized workflows. This stage of the third pilot saw us return to the Future Fabrics Expo’s Knowledge Hub to share our findings with the wider industry.

PILOT 2 (pt. 2): Future Fabrics Expo

Completed

Q2 2023 - Q1 2024

For this part of our second pilot we continued our journey with the Small But Perfect cohort, this time being invited to take our display into The Sustainable Angle’s Future Fabrics Expo.

We Also used this activation to further research and develop our xyz.id(v0.3), taking a focus on our collaborative Smart Tech-pack feature (an important part of a designs xID), as well as placing our Smart care-labels onto the actual products (zIDs), which in turn allowed us to test our Digital Product Passports for the first time. We did this by following a New Design Journey, from initial ideation, right through to finished designs production-prototypes and in-market products, all undertaken within London in the week preceding the Expo. We documented this journey in a short film, created in collaboration with multi-disciplinary artist Kundai.

‘PILOT 0’

Whilst our mission has remained true - that being to help independent brands and designers to thrive through leveraging circular technology and models - our project has evolved quite a bit.

It began life in 2017 as trans-seasonal multi-brand concept store, SWIM XYZ.

Though we didn’t know it at the time, this was - in effect - our first de-facto research pilot.

It was through running this non-wholesale concept store, testing innovative and collaborative inventory and revenue sharing, that we got a deeper understanding of the challenges facing young, creator-led designer brands trying to survive within the ‘deep-end’ of the existing ‘one-size-fits-all’ traditional fashion system.

When the Covid pandemic responses hit retail, rendering it no longer possible to open our doors to shoppers, we decided the time was right to pivot, focusing our efforts further upstream in the supply chain this time, giving birth to the xyz.exchange and its xyz.id protocol.
